Heat Is Not Distributed Evenly
Urban temperatures can vary significantly even across relatively short distances.
Areas with dense development, limited vegetation, and heat-retaining surfaces may remain warmer than nearby neighborhoods with greater tree cover, open space, or different building patterns.
JANU researchers are mapping these variations to examine how the physical structure of the city influences local temperature conditions.
The study focuses on:
Surface temperature
Patterns in how roads, buildings, parks, and other surfaces absorb and retain heat
Vegetation
The relationship between tree cover, green space, and local temperature
Urban form
How building density and land use influence heat accumulation
Community exposure
Differences in heat conditions experienced across neighborhoods
Mapping Seoul
Researchers are combining measurements collected across selected areas of Seoul with environmental and spatial datasets.
By comparing temperature patterns with land use and vegetation, the team aims to identify recurring conditions associated with higher levels of urban heat.
The work may also help researchers understand how changes to urban design and green infrastructure could affect local temperature conditions over time.
